Controlled Fabric Buying or an Obsession?

Friends were over the other day as I was ironing some fabric I had just washed. It was a red load. I told them that I thought if I got caught up with washing and ironing my new fabrics I would become familiar with them and wouldn't buy the same fabric again. I really enjoy my stash and don't feel a great need to "use" the fabric. Once they were all ironed and folded I tried to find room in the drawers. They all fit pretty well after some creative folding.

I had just finished telling them how I feel I always have pretty good control over my fabric shopping sprees. They didn't seem to agree and hinted that I was obsessed. We had some good laughs over that. So what do you think? Are we obsessed? I know I have lots of fabric. These four drawers are probably less than half of what I have. But I have seen others with far more.
Yes, I know many of us would like to use our stash more often. That is why I wish for all to Sew Long.

If it is an obsession, it's a benign one.

It's an obsession but don't tell anyone.

Hi Gayle, I have been meaning to do a search to find your blog and kept forgetting until today when you commented on mine. You are doing a great job so far. If you want to keep the words from breaking up along a picture, choose Center for the position of the photos and Large for size. I'll mention your blog on mine.

obsessions aren't necessarily bad.... or so I tell myself :-)

Just look at how pretty those drawers are! Gayle, I took a class from you a few umpteen years ago at MQ. You were getting rid of books and stuff, because you were going to give up quilting and go into the business world. What happened? I'm glad you didn't give it up, but I'm curious.

I think you could spend all day just gazing at the beauty of those drawers...we just like to gather our colors around us.

Some people buy quilt kits or the entire fabric for one quilt in one shop. The rest of us (you included, obviously) buy as and when - the only creative way to be, I affirm!

I'm obsessed with fabric too. I never found a sale that I could ignore. I prefer to say I'm an uncontrolled collector who's doing her part to stabilize the economy, and having a lot of fun doing it.

I'm a new blogger too, and found you via Wanda. I love your drawers of fabric that are so tidily arranged.

Yes, we're obsessed and we all might as well just admit it! There, I said it out loud! I found your blog via Wanda and I just want to say that any friend of Wanda's is a friend of mine! Welcome to blogland.

Gayle--it's ok to have an obsession. I think the best words of wisdom regarding a large stash are "just taking it out and looking at it is using your fabric." So I'm sure you use your stash all the time. :)

I don't consider buying fabric an obsession.
It is how we create a palette for the art we do.
If you don't buy it today it won't be available later.
You can't create great work without an extensive palette.

Wanda sent me over; I put my pic up in your "followers" and it cut my head off.....*L*
...or maybe it exploded last time I made a wrong measurement.
BTW.....it's not an obsession, it's a necessity!

It's not an obsession, it's an addiction, but a lovely one that I couldn't live without. It's even worse for me since I work part time at a local quilt store. Glad you decided to join blogland.

I obsessed than too. I just started quilting about three years ago and more than your drawers.
BTW, welcome to blogland. I like your quilts a lot.

Possessing and obsessing aren't bad things in the quilting world. I do both....quite successfully, I might add. I'm quite impressed with the tidy order of your possessions.

QuiltyGoodness,
If you have been quilting 20 years and are in the Chicago area perhaps you heard me say the same thing at a lecture in the area. 24 years ago my daughter complained that I never use my fabric and my response was "I use it every time I look at it." Nice to know others feel the same way.
